Box Score Patriots Complete Sweep of Opening Day Doubleheader in Fort Myers, Improving to 4-2 on the Season
FORT MYERS, Fla. — Less than three hours after completing a 5-0 shutout in the opening game, Valley Forge baseball returned to George Brett Field and claimed the nightcap as well, defeating Baruch College 2-1 on Saturday evening to complete a sweep of the day's doubleheader. The victory improved the Patriots to 4-2 on the season and served as a statement performance to open their Florida spring break trip.
Brandon Dalmado (2-1) was the central figure in the victory, delivering a complete-game performance of the highest order. Over seven innings, Dalmado did not issue a single walk, struck out six, and allowed just one unearned run on six hits. His ground-ball efficiency was particularly notable — he induced 11 groundouts against only three flyouts — limiting hard contact and working out of trouble with economy even as two defensive miscues threatened to cost him runs.
Baruch (0-2) drew first blood in the top of the first inning when Peter Marino reached base and came around to score on an error, giving the Bearcats a 1-0 advantage. Dalmado subsequently retired Baruch in order or near-order in four of the next six half-innings, stranding multiple runners and never allowing the deficit to grow.
Valley Forge answered in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out rally. Zack Haines drew a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Juan Lopez delivered a run-scoring double to left field, knotting the game at one. The Patriots then completed the comeback in the bottom of the seventh when pinch runner Carson Lengle stole second and came home on a walk-off RBI double to center by Haines, securing the 2-1 final.
Haines was the offensive catalyst in the nightcap, going 2-for-3 with a double and the decisive run batted in. Lopez contributed a double and an RBI of his own, while the Patriots drew four walks against Baruch starter John Kim (0-1), who struck out nine batters but was unable to hold the lead through the sixth.
Combined across both games of the doubleheader, Valley Forge totaled 15 hits and seven runs while surrendering just one run over 14 innings of pitching. The twin victories represent the program's strongest single-day performance of the season and set a confident tone for the remainder of the spring break schedule.
