Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Closes Out Semester with an Exciting Win

Valley Forge dropped a pair of tough conference games at home but overcame a 15 point deficit to win their semester finale.

Valley Forge 54 Bryn Athyn 81

Phoenixville, PA - The Lions of Bryn Athyn and Valley Forge played a tightly contested first half, with the score tied 28-28 just prior to halftime. The game then shifted in favor of Bryn Athyn, who gained a double digit lead midway through the third quarter. Fueled by their second unit, the Lions kept their foot on the gas. They totaled 46 bench points, including 25 from Kearah Henry. UVF was highlighted by Jessi Manning, who notched an impressive double double with 16 points and 17 rebounds. Mariah Matthews added a season high 14 points.

Valley Forge 49 Keystone 60

Phoenixville, PA - UVF came out swinging and built an early 13-2 lead against Keystone College, but the Giants quickly cut down the deficit and began to pull ahead. Keystone would hold onto their second quarter lead, winning the game and improving their conference record to 3-0.

Valley Forge found success inside, recording 36 points in the paint and adding 8 points on free throws, but couldn't find their rhythm from distance, shooting just 1-12 from three point range. In spite of the loss, Jasmine Hamilton and Jessi Manning each recorded double doubles on efficient shooting. Hamilton contributed an even 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Manning scored 15 points and grabbed 16 boards.

Valley Forge 62 PSU Berks 58

Reading, PA - The Lions of Penn State Berks looked to be in control of the game early, as they led UVF 20-10 after the first quarter and carried a 31-19 lead into halftime. The Patriots trailed by as much as 15 points during the second quarter. The second half told a different story. The Patriots surprised the Lions with a "run-and-jump" defense and made shots to chip away at the deficit. Ultimately, a 15-1 run late in the fourth gave the Patriots the lead and a much needed win.

Dominique Barnes spaced the floor for the Patriots, scoring 9 of her 13 points from three point territory. Mariah Matthews played the entirety of the contest and reached double figures, contributing 12 points and 4 assists. Destiny Cox and Kaionna Hanna each earned 2 steals on the defensive end. The Patriots had several key performers, but no star shined brighter than Jasmine Hamilton. She had a terrific statline of 22 points, 10 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 4 steals while shooting 50% from the field and making all four of her free throw attempts.

Coach Gretchen LeVan lauded Hamilton's performance, commenting "Jas had her best game by far. She started to read the defense and executed. She found every hole to the basket and couldn't be stopped. She was huge for us on defense and on the boards while keeping herself out of foul trouble. We definitely felt her [impact] and she played every single minute of the game… It was her most complete game as a Patriot."

With a four week stretch between their last game and their next, Coach Gretchen LeVan says the team will look to carry momentum through the hiatus. "Winning that last game is big for momentum and spirit. They enter next semester knowing what they're capable of. I'm proud of the team and their belief in themselves regardless of circumstances. We're going to continue the process of gelling together as a team. Down the road we're going to be better off as a team knowing the start we have had and the lessons we have learned… We're going to gel together and continue our momentum when January rolls around."

Valley Forge has played their final contest of the fall semester. They will return to action when they travel to face Cedar Crest on Thursday, January 5.
