Patriots Drop Two to Defenders

Phoenixville, PA – The University of Valley Forge Softball team hosted the Defenders of Clarks Summit University for a double-header on Wednesday evening. Valley Forge dropped both frames to the Defenders with scores of 14-5 and 7-3.

GAME ONE: 14-5 CLARKS SUMMIT
A rough first-inning for the Patriots allowed for 6 Defender runs. However, the Patriots were able to respond with 4 in the bottom half. Both squads put a mark on the board in the second-inning for a 5-7 score in favor of Clarks Summit. With a two-run lead, the Defenders were able to add 3 runs on just 1 hit and 2 Patriot errors in the third, and then tallied 1 run in the fourth, and 3 runs in the fifth for the 14-5 victory.

Destynie Blythers led the team with two hits, while Laura Medio, Jaeleen Mendoza, and Lizbeth Fernandez tallied one apiece. Mendoza collected a team-high two RBI's.

Despite the loss on the mound, Medio collected four strikeouts in the outing.

GAME TWO: 7-3 CLARKS SUMMIT
Game-two was a nail biter as both teams stayed in the game. Clarks Summit jumped on top in the first-inning 1-0, but the Patriots responded with a single and a run from Blythers. The Defenders took back the lead in the second-inning, and added another run in the third for a 3-1 score. Valley Forge tied the game in the bottom half of the third with a 3-run inning. However, Clarks Summit scored 1 run on 1 hit in the fourth to claim the lead yet again. Both teams were unable to score in the fifth or sixth inning. With entering the last inning, Clarks Summit rallied 3 insurance runs to push their lead to 4, and with the Patriots unable to make an offensive dent, the Defenders took home the 7-3 win.

Blythers collected two hits and two runs. Maribell Dominguez, Medio, Fernandez, and Jordyn Clarke tallied one each.

Medio notched a team-high 2 RBI's, and added three strikeouts to her stat column as a pitcher.

Valley Forge will travel to Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania to take on the Highlanders of Cairn University at Conwell Egan Catholic High School at 1:00 p.m. with the second game to follow.
