Chambersburg, PA – The University of Valley Forge Baseball team traveled to Chambersburg, PA on Saturday afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader. The Patriots fell to the Phoenix by scores of 11-5, and 13-1. With the losses, Valley Forge moves to 1-4 on the season.
GAME ONE: 11-5 WILSON
The Phoenix captured the lead early, scoring 5 runs on 4 hits in just the first inning. The offensive surge continued as Wilson tallied 3 runs on 3 hits in the second. Valley Forge held the Phoenix in the third inning, but Wilson struck again in the fourth with 3 insurance runs. Trailing 11-0 at the top of the fifth, Valley Forge found a spark, rallying together 5 runs on 4 hits. Despite having two outs, after a Darrell Soto-Diaz walk, sophomore
Thomas Bost started the drive with a single to left field.
Manuel Caballero worked the pitch count for a walk, which loaded the bases.
Marcos Schneider put the Patriots on the board with a hard hit single to third base, scoring Diaz. Patrick Trevillio followed suit with a single to right field, scoring both Bost and Caballero. Lefty,
Jeffery Espinal earned a walk, advancing Trevillio to home. Junior
Chandler Beard stepped up to the plate and singled to left center, collecting two RBI's as Schneider and Trevillio scored. Despite a last minute rally, the Patriots offensive game came to a close after the fifth inning for a 11-5 final score in Wilson's favor.
As a team, the Patriots collected 5 runs on 6 hits with 5 RBI's.
Thomas Bost led the squad with 2 hits, while Trevillio and Beard tallied 2 RBI's each.
GAME TWO: 13-1 WILSON
After two scoreless innings, Wilson rode their momentum from game one to strike first in the bottom of the third after a single and sacrifice fly to right field. The Phoenix produced three additional runs in the bottom of the fourth inning for a 4-0 score.
Valley Forge found themselves on the board at the top of the fifth after a triple from
Allan Goodwin, and a RBI double from Diaz. However, the Phoenix added 3 runs in the fifth, and 6 more runs in the sixth for a 13-1 final score.
The Patriots secured 1 run on 5 hits and 1 RBI.
Darrell Soto Diaz led the team with two hits and the solo RBI.
Valley Forge will be back on the field April 5
th for a doubleheader against conference foe Centenary University. The Patriots will face the Cyclones at 12/2 p.m.
