Phoenixville, PA – The University of Valley Forge Women's Basketball team (3-12) welcomed the Golden Wolves of Alvernia University (9-11) to Phoenixville on Monday night. Alvernia took advantage of the third-quarter to capture the lead and the 67-53 victory.
Amaya Brown paced the Patriots in scoring with 16 points.
Kaitlyn Hess dished out 11 points, while
Alea Flowers collected her 5
th double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Flowers also led the Patriots with 5 steals.
"What a game, we loved our focus and effort especially in the first-half," head coach
Gretchen LeVan shared. "We had Alvernia shooting 15% from the field and 0% from the three-point line with our stifling defensive stance in the first-quarter. We knew that they were going to be a tough team down the stretch, and unfortunately we were not as on point defensively and allowed them to get back into their rhythm.
Cayleen Conrad being injured in the second-quarter and unable to return was a momentum changer for us because of how instrumental she is for us on both ends of the court. This team has something special in them, they will not stop fighting, and even though our wins are minimal, we are not an easy team to beat."
Short on numbers, Valley Forge showed a determination out of the gates, gathering a quick 5-0 lead to start the contest. The Patriots didn't allow the Golden Wolves to score until halfway through the first-quarter. Tied 8-8, Alvernia would hold their first lead of the night, stretching it to 3 points before
Amaya Brown answered with a jumper. The Patriots closed out the first stanza with a swift layup from
Alea Flowers and a steal from
Cayleen Conrad that eventually sent her to the stripe. Conrad hit 1-2 from the line, giving the Patriots a 1-point lead.
The second-quarter started with a back-and-forth fight for a solid lead until the Patriots found an 8-0 run to give Valley Forge a game-high 10-point benefit. As Alvernia trailed 29-19, the Golden Wolves cut the Patriots lead to 5 at the half after a three ball and a layup.
Alvernia would claim the third-quarter, coming back from a 5-point deficit and hitting 10-19 from the field (52.6%). The Golden Wolves grabbed a 12-point lead with a minute remaining, but
Kaitlyn Hess responded with a trey ball to cut Alvernia's lead to 9 at the end of the quarter.
With Valley Forge in foul trouble, the Golden Wolves broke open, gathering a game-high 18-point lead. The Patriots attempted to hold on, but would fall 67-53.
As a team, the Patriots went 18-70 from the field (25.7%), 10-35 from behind the arc (28.6%), and 7-14 from the line (50%).
The Golden Wolves outrebounded the Patriots 65-39.
The Patriots will have a week off before traveling to Dover, Delaware to face the Wolverines of Wesley College on Tuesday, February 11 for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
