Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Valley Forge Drops Road Contest at Cabrini

Radnor, PA – The University of Valley Forge Men's Basketball traveled a short distance to face the Cavaliers of Cabrini University on Monday evening. The Patriots couldn't keep up the pace as they fell to the Cavaliers 116-101. With this loss, Valley Forge moves to 9-7 on the season, respectively.

Matthew Altamirano led the squad with a new career-high 37 points, his second 30+ game this season. Steven Eng went 50% from three-point land, draining 5-10 and collecting 17 points. Owen Bradford tallied 13 points and 9 boards, while Rafael Smith earned a season-high 12 points. Smith was followed by Aaron Hill who dropped 11 points.

"I sound like a broken record by now, but we continually are making the same mistakes," head coach DJ Damazo shared. "We need to get better on the defensive end of the floor. We cannot rely on our offense to carry us every game. I thought we played better in the second-half defensively, but we put ourselves in too big of a hole in the first-half."

Although the Patriots struck first with a jumper from Matthew Altamirano, the Cavaliers would hold the lead for the rest of the contest. Cabrini went on a 12-0 run, eventually holding a game-high 21-point lead. Steven Eng closed out the first-half with a pair of free-throws to cut the Cavaliers lead to 19 points.

Cabrini opened up the second-half in similar fashion as they consistently held a double-digit lead. From a 21-point deficit, the Patriots fought back to come within 10 points after a 9-0 run, but it was too late as the Cavaliers wrapped up the contest on a 5-2 run, securing the 116-101 win.

As a unit, the Patriots hit 41-81 from the field (50.6%), 11-30 from the three (36.7%), and 8-14 from the free-throw line (57.1%).

The Cavaliers tallied 25 points off of turnovers, and 22 second-chance points.

Valley Forge will look to get back into the winning column as they host the Mighty Macs of Immaculata University of Tuesday, February 4th at 7 p.m.
