Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Wilson Downs Patriots in Home Opener

Phoenixville, PA – The University of Valley Forge Women's Soccer team (0-2) looked for victory in their home opener, but Wilson College was able to hold them off for a 4-1 victory.

"It was a tough fight today", associate head coach Kelsey Morrison shared. "We showed our character and stuck with it until the very end. We were able to see glimpses of some of the things that we have been working on, and the coaching staff is excited about the opportunity to show those again next game."

The Phoenix of Wilson College controlled the field from the very beginning, scoring their first goal of match at the 8th minute mark. Sophomore Megan Firth would have the first shot attempt for the Patriots at 12 minutes, but the Phoenix defense would stand strong and not allow another Patriot effort in the first half until a free kick from Haven Mayhew at the 28th minute. In addition to their lock down style defense, the offense for the Phoenix was dominate; striking again at the 35th and 38th minute, extending their lead at the half to 3-0.

Wilson College increased their chances in the second half, tallying 15 shots. The Patriots had a great opportunity to close the gap in the 52nd minute with a breakaway from sophomore Cayleen Conrad but her shot would fall far right. The Phoenix reclaimed possession and scored their final goal of the match at 54:09. Valley Forge was finally able to reach the scoreboard at the 74th minute as the Phoenix were called for a foul in the 18-yard box, resulting in a penalty kick goal from senior Carlee Conrad to make the score 1-4.

With Patriots goalkeeper, Ashley Depointe having a temporary injury early in the first half, Carlee Conrad made her first appearance in goal, making 7 saves in just 24 minutes. Depointe was able to quickly recover and finished the match with 6 saves in her 64 minutes of play.

Wilson recorded a 36-4 advantage in total shots, and 8-0 on corner kicks.

The Patriots will look to bounce back as they make their way to Virginia to face Christendom College next Friday, September 13th at 4:30 p.m.
