Phoenixville, PA – Freshman
Matthew Altamirano dropped a career-high 26 points in Saturday's 111-90 win over the Cougars of Medgar Evers College. With this win, it is the fourth game and second consecutive that Valley Forge has surpassed 100 points, ranking third in NCAA Division III in scoring (104.8 per game).
Following Altamirano, the Bradford Brothers put on a show, both securing a double-double.
Derian Bradford dished out a career-high 20 points and 12 rebounds, while
Owen Bradford also secured 20 points and 12 rebounds. Derian hit 9-19 from the field and 2-4 from three-point land, as Owen went 7-11 from the field and 6-6 at the charity stripe.
Sophomore
Bennie Howard Jr. collected 11 points, while both
Aaron Hill and
Joshua Hosey grabbed themselves 10 points each.
"I'm really proud of the way our guys battled," head coach
DJ Damazo stated. "Medgar Evers made a concerted effort to limit our three-point attempts, which allowed other guys to step up and finish around the rim. This win gives us momentum going into Thanksgiving break and shows that we can win in many different ways. We look forward to a few days off and then we will get back at it for a couple more games to close out the semester."
With the first-half in full swing, the Patriots and Cougars battled in out for the lead. The Bradford duo secured the first eight points for the Patriots, hitting four consecutive short jumpers. Tied 23-23 with 12:38 remaining in the half, the Patriots would attempt a quick run powered by a trey ball from Altamirano, but the Cougars would stay close, trading the lead four different time within a four-minute time span. Medgar Evers found momentum with a three-ball, increasing their lead to 7 points until the Patriots would fight back with an old fashion 3-point play from
Joshua Hosey. Down 1-point, the Cougars fouled junior
Rafael Smith who sank a pair of free-throws to give the Patriots the lead. With the time running down, Altamirano would connect on a steal from
Rafael Smith for a last second layup, handing Valley Forge a 3-point advantage going into halftime.
Going into the second-half, the Cougars struck first with a jumper. However, the Patriots would slowly increase their lead from a handful of free-throws and a jumper. With a quick Medgar Evers spurt, the Patriots lead would be challenged as the Cougars were able to drain a couple three balls. Valley Forge was eventually able to slow down the Cougars pace and steadily re-build their lead. The Patriots offense lit up in the last 10 minutes of play, not letting the Cougars come close for a 111-90 final score.
As a team, Valley Forge hit 41-81 from the field (50%), 12-34 from three-point land (35.3%), and 24-25 from the free-throw line (96%). Additionally, the Patriots capitalized from 40 bench points, and 58 points in the paint.
The Patriots will be back in action after Thanksgiving break as they travel to face the Blue Jays of Elizabethtown College for a late 8 p.m. game.
