Phoenixville, PA – The University of Valley Forge Women's Basketball team welcomed the Colonels of Wilkes University to UVF on Monday evening. UVF picked up a big win on their home floor with a final score of 75-70.
The Patriots had three players score in double figures. Senior
Jhanel Brown (Westmoreland, VA) led the way with 21 points and 16 rebounds. Sophomore
Amaya Brown (Trenton, NJ) added 20 points. Junior
Carlee Conrad (Pine Grove, PA) finished with 17 points and 7 assists.
Both teams played an equal first quarter. Neither team was able to pull away during the first frame as the scored would be knotted at 13.
With a little under 8 minutes on the clock and leading by 1, the Colonels were able to hit back to back threes to give Wilkes a 6-point edge. However, the Patriots had an answer.
Amaya Brown lobbed the ball inside to
Jhanel Brown. Brown spun and laid the ball gently off the glass to stop the Wilkes run. Brown's Bucket sparked a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to 1 at the 4:00 minute mark. Both teams continued to trade baskets over the remaining 4:00 minutes in the first half. Valley Forge trailed 30-29 at intermission.
The Patriots and Colonels continued their back and forth play during the first 5 minutes of the second half. Trailing by 1,
Carlee Conrad dropped a beautiful pass over the Wilkes defense right into the hands of
Jhanel Brown. Brown nailed the difficult layup with defenders draped all over her. The Patriots led 39-38. On the following Patriots possession,
Cayleen Conrad found a wide open
Alea Flowers. Flowers drained the long trey to give UVF 4-point advantage with 4:30 left in the 3rd quarter. No sooner were the Patriots able to grab a slight lead did Wilkes have an answer. The Colonel's Gab Giordano scored on consecutive possessions for 4 of her 29 points to tie the game at 42. Under a minute left and the score tied, senior
Lindsay LeSueur knocked down a jumper from the corner and followed by a layup from
Carlee Conrad, the Patriots led 49-45 with 22 seconds left in the third period. UVF received a small gift before time expired. As time was about to expire and the Patriots in the bonus,
Jhanel Brown was fouled and sent to the free throw line with 3 seconds remaining. Brown split the pair of free throws which gave UVF a 5-point lead after 3 periods of play.
Valley Forge used a 7-1 run to build their biggest lead of the game.
Alea Flowers dribbled into the lane for an easy layup. After the Patriots made a stop on the defensive end,
Carlee Conrad buried a three with just under 6 minutes to play to give UVF a 60-49 lead. Wilkes was able to chip away at the Patriot lead. The Colonels brought the Patriot lead down to just 3 with a little over a minute remaining. Wilkes played the foul game to extend the clock and hope the Patriots would miss on their opportunities at the charity stripe. However, that did not happen. Valley Forge finished the final 1:39 by going 9 of 10 from the free throw line and walked away with an impressive 75-70 win.
