Solid Pitching Plus Timely Offense Propels Patriots Over Cougars

MYRTLE BEACH, SC. – The University of Men's Baseball (2-10) look close out their trip in Myrtle Beach with a win over the Chatham University Cougars (5-5).

Game Summary – Patriots 7, Cougars 6
The Patriots entered the game coming off a tough loss in the early morning of the day. Rallying the sticks early, the Patriots scored four runs to take a three-run lead over the Cougars. Costly errors by the Cougars and good base-running fueled the Patriots. Brian Edwards picked up where he left off, reaching first from laying down a bunt, then stealing second and advancing from a single by Cody Rak. Edwards crossed home plated thanks to Jeffery Espinal's rip down the left field line and advanced Rak to second. Waldo Odens Jr. took full advantage of the Patriots' momentum as he blasted a 3-run homer over the wall in left center. The Patriots concluded the inning and scoring in the third to add to their lead.

The Cougars were down but not out as they mounted a comeback as they gained a one-run lead scoring five combined runs in the fifth and sixth innings. The Patriots were not reliving this experience twice in one day and rose to the occasion. Jonas Marte started things for the Patriots with a double to center, later scoring on a throwing error by the Cougars' attempt to throw out Brian Reyes at first.

All knotted up on the scoreboard, Rak continued his hitting as he singled opposite field to score Reyes to take a one-run lead over the Cougars. The Cougars closed out the inning and looked to mount another comeback to take the game.

Chatham put runners in scoring position as Cameron Moeller for the Cougars hit a perfect ball down the right field line to set up his runner to score but an amazing play on the ball and throw to home plate from Sophomore Marcus Fultz to tag out the runner to save the lead and close out the inning exploded the Patriots' ball club in this clutch moment. The Patriots didn't score in the ninth but closed the door on the Cougars, allowing Rak's RBI single to be the game winner, and wrapped up their week-long trip with a win.

Zach Nunnery earned his second win for the Patriots on the mound allowing one run in four innings facing fourteen batters and sitting down three via strikeouts.

Up Next – The Patriots will return to their home field to face off against the Christendom Crusaders in a double header on Saturday, March 17th at 1PM and 3PM. The Crusaders enter the game with a record of 4-4.
