Allentown, PA – The University of Valley Forge Women's Basketball team traveled to Allentown, PA to take on the Falcons of Cedar Crest College on Tuesday evening. The Patriots took down the falcons by a score of 72-55.
The Patriots (11-8) were led offensively by Natalie Cortes with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Jhanel Brown added yet another double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The Falcons (3-20) were led by Geminii Carbrera who had 18 points and 5 rebounds.
The Patriots and Falcons each traded baskets until the Patriots used a late 1
st quarter run to gain the advantage. With the score tied at 9 and under a minute remaining, Natalie Cortes made a layup on a fastbreak that gave UVF an 11-9 lead.
Jhanel Brown added 2 free throws to close out the 1 quarter and give the Patriots a 13-9 lead.
Up by 8 at the 6:16 mark of the second quarter, the Patriots began to pull away. Junior
Lindsay LeSueur made a jumper that sparked an 11-2 run that was capped off by another fastbreak layup from Natalie Cortes. The Patriots lead sat at 28-13 with just over 3 minutes left in the half. Cedar Crest was able to bring the UVF lead to single digits when Shemeca Thompson hit a jumper as time expired to make the score 30-21 in favor of Valley Forge.
The Patriots used a big 3
rd quarter to put the game out of reach. UVF started the half with a 6-0 run to push their lead to 15 (36-21). With the lead still at 15 with 1:18 left,
Alea Flowers made a layup and then knocked down a free throw to complete the old fashion 3-point play. Flowers would later make a free throw and a jumper by
Shania Walker made the Patriot lead 17 (53-36) as the 3
rd quarter came to a close.
The 17-point deficit was too much for Cedar Crest to overcome. The Falcons and Patriots would each score 19 4
th quarter points. UVF walked away with a 72-55 win and improve their record to 11-8 on the season.
