Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Big Fourth Quarter Leads to Win Over Gators

Phoenixville, PA – The University of Valley Forge Women's Basketball team welcomed the Gators of Notre Dame of Maryland University to UVF on Thursday evening.  The Patriots used a big 4th quarter to win their 12th game of the season by a score of 60-49.

The Patriots (12-8) were led by sophomore Natalie Cortes with 18 points and 9 rebounds.  Junior Jhanel Brown had 12 points and 16 rebounds while Carlee Conrad had 10 points and 6 rebounds.

The Gators (7-17) were led offensively by Zaria Comer with 10 points and 9 rebounds.  Justice Walrath and Justine Mudiay each had 9 points.

After the Gators Dania Taylor buried a 3 with 2:14 remaining in the first quarter, the Patriots found themselves down by 10.  UVF was able to cut the Gator lead in half thanks to an old fashion 3-point play by Jhanel Brown.  Seconds later, Alea Flowers made a steal and raced down the floor for an easy layup that made score 16-11 after 1 quarter of play.

Both teams traded baskets throughout the 2nd quarter and ND of Maryland led UVF 30-24 after the first half.

As the 3rd quarter began, the Patriots began to attack the basket.  Carlee Conrad drove to the lane, spun away from the defender and laid the ball up and in to bring the Patriots to within 4 at the 8:17 mark.  Conrad's layup sparked an 8-0 run that gave UVF their first lead of the game 35-33.  The Gators would end the 3rd quarter with a 6-2 run to give them a slight 39 -37 lead heading into the final quarter.

The 4th quarter was the turning point for the Patriots.  After the Gators pushed their lead to 7, it was all UVF.  Natalie Cortes was scorching.  Cortes scored the next 10 Patriot points and followed by a 3 from Amaya Brown and a tip-in from Jhanel Brown, Valley Forge jumped out in front and led by a score of 54-46 with 3 minutes remaining in the game.  The UVF defense tightened and only allowed a total of 10 Gator points in the 4th quarter.  The Patriots used a big 4th quarter to win their 12 game of the season 60-49.
