Washington, DC – The University of Valley Forge Men's Basketball team went on the road to face the Bison of Gallaudet University in Washington, DC on Saturday afternoon. UVF fell by a score of 61-60.
The Patriots (3-14) were led on offense by senior guard
Alex Sanchez who had 23 points and 9 rebounds. Both
Arthur Wilborn and
Sean Word had 15 points and each recorded double digits in rebounds.
Emanuel Toms dished out 10 assists on the afternoon.
The Bison (8-14) had 3 players score in double figures. Noah Valencia had 14 points while Andy Cruz added 12 points and 6 rebounds. Trace Martin had 10 points for Gallaudet.
The First half saw 3 lead changes as both teams traded baskets for the first 10 minutes of the game. Gallaudet built a 13 point lead thanks to an 18-4 run. Valley Forge then went on a 9-3 run to close the Bison lead to 7 but with only seconds remaining, the Bison's Trace Martin made a steal. Martin launched a deep three that found the bottom of the net to stretch the Gallaudet lead back to double digits as both team entered the locker room 34-24.
Down by 8 and 2 minutes remaining in the game, UVF was running out of time and needed to score in a hurry. After
Arthur Wilborn grabbed a rebound, he found
Sean Word open and Word laid it up and in. Word was also fouled on the play and he completed the and 1 to bring the Patriots to within 5. Moments later,
Alex Sanchez received an outlet pass from Aurhur Wilborn. Sanchez raced down the floor and made the fastbreak layup. The Patriots were now only down 3 (61-58) with 43 seconds remaining. With time running out, UVF was forced to foul. Gallaudet missed the front end of the 1 and 1 and on the Patriots next possession,
Emanuel Toms drove to the lane for the easy bucket. Again, Gallaudet missed the front end of the 1 and 1 and the Patriots had a chance to steal the game from the home team. With 5 seconds left,
Alex Sanchez grabbed the inbound pass and as he turned to head up court, two Bison defenders forced him to just step out of bounds. The Patriots comeback fell short as they lost to Gallaudet by a final score of 61-60.
