Delhi, NY – The Patriots Women's Basketball team traveled to Delhi, NY to take on the Broncos of Suny Delhi on Saturday afternoon. Valley Forge cut the Bronco lead to two with under a minute to play, but a big layup by Delhi would seal the win for the Broncos. Valley Forge lost on the road by a score of 80-76.
Offensively, the Patriots had five players score in double figures. UVF was led by
Jhanel Brown with 18 points and 11 rebounds for her 4th double-double of the year.
Cayleen Conrad added 16 points including going 4-7 from long range.
Kaitlyn Hess had 12 points off the bench and
Amaya Brown and
Alea Flowers each recorded 10 points for Valley Forge.
Leading 8-4 in the first quarter, the Broncos used a 9-2 run to stretch their lead to 15-6. With 4:29 remaining on the clock, UVF's
Cayleen Conrad nailed a three to stop the Bronco run and bring the Patriots to within 6. That would be the difference as quarter #1 came to a close. Suny Delhi led by a score of 19-13.
Cayleen Conrad had the hot hand in the second quarter. Conrad knocked down 3 three pointers to take care of the Patriots scoring in the first 5 minutes to keep Valley Forge within striking distance. Moments later,
Carlee Conrad knocked down a pair of free throws with just under 5 minutes remaining in the half to bring UVF to within 3 at 27-24. The Broncos closed out the half with a 9-2 run. Suny Delhi led at the half by a score of 38-28.
With both team trading baskets for the better part of the 3rd quarter, Suny Delhi continued to hold the slight advantage. After 3 quarters of play, the Broncos led 58-49.
Suny Delhi led by as many as 16 in the 4th quarter. That didn't stop the Patriots from believing they could make a comeback. With only 3:30 left on the clock UVF needed to make a run and they did just that. UVF's
Jhanel Brown grabbed an offensive rebound and put the ball back up and in. Brown's rebound would ignite a 13-0 Patriot run. Valley Forge trailed by just 3 with 58 seconds remaining. After the Broncos split a pair of free throws, the Patriot's
Jhanel Brown made a big layup to bring Valley Forge to within 2 with 45 seconds left in the game. Unfortunately, Suny Delhi made a layup to go up by 4 and the Patriots were unable to complete the comeback. UVF lost by a final score of 80-76.
