Phoenixville, PA – The University of Valley Forge Women's Basketball team celebrated senior day by honoring seniors
Bailey Mayforth and
Taniyah Faison. UVF defeated the Keystone Giants 79-75 in dramatic fashion on Saturday afternoon.
The Patriots (7-7) had three players score in double figures. Offensively UVF was led by Senior guard
Bailey Mayforth. Mayforth had 24 points and 6 rebounds. She shot a scorching 66% from behind the three-point line going 6-9. Junior Forward
Jhanel Brown continues to be a double-double machine. Brown had 20 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Natalie Cortes added 12 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists.
The Giants (3-16) were led by Maddy Moro who had 25 points and 16 rebounds. Nina Hodanich added 15 points for Keystone.
The first half included 6 lead changes and 10 ties. The Patriots went on a small 5-0 run to close out the first quarter. Carlie Conrad nailed a 3 and then converted two free throws to give the Patriots a 13-11 lead after 1 period of play.
After Keystone tied the game 25-25 late in the 2
nd quarter, Valley Forge began to heat up.
Bailey Mayforth grabbed a rebound and put the ball back up and in. After a
Jhanel Brown layup and three triples from
Kaitlyn Hess and
Bailey Mayforth, the Patriots jumped out to a 38-29 halftime lead.
Halfway the third quarter the momentum began to swing in favor of Keystone. The Giants went on a 10-2 run and brought the once Patriot lead of 15 down to just 6.
The fourth quarter would be one to remember. It looked as though UVF would be in complete control. After 6 straight points from
Jhanel Brown, the Patriots built their lead back to double digits 58-48. The Giants then used a 7-3 run to chip away at the Patriot lead 61-57. Moments later Keystone took the lead 63-62 with 4:53 remaining. Back and forth play continued and the Giants would tie the game at 75 with 20 seconds left on the clock. With just 11 seconds left to play in regulation,
Bailey Mayforth made sure that UVF would not head to overtime. With a hand in her face, Mayforth rose up and launched a three from deep in the corner. The ball hit nothing but net and gave the Patriots a 78-75 lead. Mayforth added a free throw with 4 seconds left to seal the win for UVF 79-75.
