Patriots Sweep Tri-Match

Hackettstown, N.J - The University of Valley Forge Women's Volleyball team traveled to Hackettstown, NJ to play in a tri-match against the Penn State Abington Nittany Lions and the host school, Centenary University Cyclones.

UVF vs. Centenary University

Valley Forge used a 10-1 scoring run late to win game 1. Kaitlyn Hess and Brittany Eberly each took turns delivering powerful serves that put pressure on the Cyclones defense. The Patriots played a complete game and took game 1 by a final score of 25-17.  UVF got off to a hot start in game 2.  The Patriots opened up an 8-3 lead thanks to a balanced attack.  Megan Freed, Kaitlyn Hess, Megan Bard, Hannah Carter, Hannah Hawkryluk  and Brittany Eberly all finished off points to help push the Patriots lead to 8-3.   Centenary was never able to recover and the Patriots went on to finish off the Cyclones and win game 2 by a final score of 25-13.  Game 3 looked very much like game 2.  UVF jumped out to a 9-2 lead.  The Patriots reeled off 6 straight points to end game 3 and earn the win in straight sets.

UVF vs. Penn State Abington

The Patriots won a five set thriller to close out the tri match on Saturday afternoon.  UVF built a commanding 17-8 lead.  The Nittany Lions tried to attempt a comeback but that fell short after 3 straight points.  Valley Forge reeled off a run of 8 impressive points to win game 1 by a final score of 25-11.  The Patriots dropped games 2 and 3, each by a final score of 25-22.  Being down 2 games to 1, it was either win or go home.  In a game that went back and forth and neither team giving in, Valley Forge found itself down 1 late in the set.  With the score 20-19 in favor of the Nittany Lions, the Patriots needed a big play.  After a ball handling error by PSU Abington that tied the game at 20, Kaitlyn Hess served out the final 5 points including a game winning ace to propel UVF to the game 4 win.

Heading to the fifth and final set, Valley Forged needed to dig deep and pull off one more game.  After Penn State Abington tied the game and took a 9-8 lead, Megan Freed took her turn to serve.  So far on this young season, Freed has made the most of her opportunities.  Behind Megan Freed's outstanding serves and a kill by Megan Bard, the Patriots reeled off 5 straight points to take a 14-9 lead.  UVF closed out the sudden death set thanks to a Lion error to win game 5 and the Match.
