Wilkes-Barre, PA – The University of Valley Forge women's basketball team traveled to Wilkes-Barre to take on the Colonels of Wilkes University. Valley Forge struggled early on, giving way to an 89-76 Wilkes victory. The Patriots fell to a 2-5 record as a result.
The Patriots came out of the gate sluggish, yielding 11 points to the Colonels, assisted by three crucial turnovers.
Bailey Mayforth put the Patriots on the board with a lay-up around the six-minute mark, followed by a quick three thirty seconds afterward. The second half wouldn't fare much better for the Patriots, who committed 10 turnovers and were outscored by a 22-17 margin, putting the Colonels up 44-28.
The third quarter saw a focus Patriots squad intent on making a comeback. Valley Forge won the quarter, outscoring their opponent 24-17, powered by the stellar play of
Jhanel Brown on the inside. The key moment of the third quarter came with 4:25 left to play where
Alea Flowers nailed a three, sparking an 8-3 run, making it just a two score game. The run saw four different Patriots score, keeping the Colonels' defense on their toes.
The final period was not as kind to Valley Forge, with Wilkes getting the better end of point advantage, outscoring the Patriots 28-24. Valley Forge came to within six off of a field goal from beyond the arc by
Carlee Conrad at 8:12, but were not able to close the gap, losing by a final score of 89-76.
