PHOENIXVILLE, PA- The University of Valley Forge hosted Penn State Brandywine Thursday night, in a game that was moved up from Friday due to the pending snow storm. The home fans would not be disappointed as the Patriots would come out on top 77-73, ending their 9 game losing streak.
In the first half, the Patriots kept taking leads, but costly turnovers (9) would allow the Nittany Lions right back in the game. At 15:58 DeAndre Gadsden's jumper put the Patriots up 7. The Nittany Lions came right back. The Patriots would grab another 7 point lead at 10:38 on a layup by
Jalen Archer. At 9:10 a
Willie Saffore layup gave the Patriots their largest lead of the half, 9. At the half, the Patriots held just a 1 point lead, 31-30.
Devin Williams would lead all first half scorers with 9 points.
The second half started off well for the Patriots, as early on they went on a 12-2 run, extending their lead to 13. With 10:31 to go,
Thorne McIntosh hit a jumper that gave the Patriots their largest lead, 18. Again, turnovers, and missed shots, lead to the Nittany Lions coming right back. With just under a minute to play, the lead was cut to 4. The Patriots would hit their free throws down the stretch, and hold on to the 77-73 victory.
Assistant Coach Ron Vargas had this to say,
"I thought tonight our pressure defense was key. The first half we were very sloppy with turning the ball over. We corrected that a bit in the second half. We shot well the first part of the second half and that gave us the cushion that we needed to get the victory."Devin Williams led all scorers with 21 for the Patriots.
Thorne McIntosh had 11.
Sean Word recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
The Patriots will return to action Tuesday, January 26
th, when the will host the NCAA Division III 18
th ranked  Chargers of Lancaster Bible College. Tip-off is set for 8pm.
