PHOENIXVILLE, PA – The University of Valley Forge Women's Soccer Team dropped a pair of games over the weekend. After suffering an 8-0 defeat on Saturday against Christendom College, the Patriots rallied to almost beat Penn State Mont Alto on Sunday. However, they could not complete the comeback and lost to the Lions by a final score of 4-3.
Trailing 2-0 just 15 minutes into the game, the Patriots'
Olivia Strohm began to put her footprint on the game. In the16th minute she beat several players down the sideline, cut it in, and found fellow freshman
Karalyn Vilcko in front of the net. Vilcko knocked it in for her 2
nd goal of the season. The score would remain the same until halftime, 2-1 in favor of the Lions.
In the second half, although the Patriots controlled much of the possession, two defensive breakdowns gave the Lions a 4-1 advantage in the 73
rd minute. One minute later, just as she did before, Strohm raced down the sideline and chipped the goalie far post to cut the lead in half. Nine minutes later, again Strohm found herself on the right edge of the box, and this time she beat the goalie near post to put the Patriots within one with eight minutes remaining. It was Strohm's third goal of the season.
Although the Patriots kept pressing, the Lions stood firm and the 4-3 advantage held up.
After the game, Patriots Head Coach
Juan Delcid said, "
Olivia was unstoppable today. She gave a big boost to our attack. Mackenzie also came up with some key saves to keep us in it. We outshot them, but just couldn't find the back of the net enough. I'm extremely proud of the way we played today."
Patriots goalie Mackenzi Maun had 8 saves and Vilcko assisted on both of Strohm's goals.
The Patriots next contest will be at home on Saturday, September 26
th at 3:00PM.
