PHOENIXVILLE – The University of Valley Forge women's basketball took on Penn State Schuylkill on Tuesday, February 3
rd. The Patriots would have their hands full against the Lions, who came into the contest with a record of 12-3.
The first half was pretty tight early on, with the Lions holding a 14-13 advantage at the 8:59 mark. The Patriots' shooting from 3-point range kept things close for much of the half.
Mikala Brinson and
Bailey Mayforth each knocked in two 3-pointers to pace the Patriots. With 6:05 remaining in the half,
Shequoya Bonner grabbed an offensive rebound and hit a jumper to keep it a one point margin, 19-18. Holding a two point lead with 2:00 remaining, the Lions used a late 8-0 scoring run to give themselves a 32-22 lead at the half.
The surge continued at the start of the second half as the Lions went on a 24-4 run. Lions' Andrea Watkins, Ashley Gordon, and Brenna Dosedlo proved difficult to stop. The trio combined for 57 points. Dosedlo also chipped in 9 assists.
However, the Patriots were not going down without a fight. Although they were facing a 30-point deficit, they kept coming after the Lions. After a barrage of 3-pointers from Brinson,
Patience Ekuta, and
Madison Arrowsmith, the Patriots trimmed the deficit to 12 (71-59). The Lions were able to survive the comeback and held on to win by a final score of 75-59.
Lions' Anna Sue Tale was a force inside. She grabbed 12 rebounds, scored 7 points, and had a game-high 5 blocks. Kerrece Seuren was also a factor inside. She had 16 rebounds and 7 points.
Mikala Brinson led the Patriots with 20 points and 5 assists.
Patience Ekuta and
Bailey Mayforth each had 9 points.
Amanda McGinness had a team-high 12 rebounds, 5 assists, and chipped in 7 points.
Madison Arrowsmith was 2-3 from 3-point range and had 6 points.
The Patriots will look to rebound this Thursday as they travel to take on their rival, Lancaster Bible College. The game will be broadcast LIVE at 7PM.
