PHOENIXVILLE, PA- The Valley Forge Christian College Women's Soccer Team faced off against the Lightning of Lehman College (NY) Sunday afternoon, in the final round of the final round of the Cedar Crest College Classic. In a defensive battle, the Lightning came out on top, outscoring the Lady Patriots, 3-0.
The Patriot's defense was tested early, with
Amanda McGinness being called upon to make five saves in the first fifteen minutes of play. Eventually, the offensive pressure and barrage of shots on target proved to be too much to handle, and Lightning mid-fielder Lillian Barreto netted a strike at the 33:19 minute mark of the first half. The Patriots held the line, and produced a handful of shots on target requiring the attention of the opposing goalie, but were unable to draw equal with the Lightning in the first 45 minutes as the first half ended in a 1-0 advantage for Lehman.
The second half started off with some excitement, with the Patriots unleashing shots that just barely missed, hitting the post and crossbar. As the half wore on, though the teams traded quality scoring opportunities, it was Lehman who was able to capitalize on one in the 69
th minute and one at the bitter end in the 89
th minutes to best the Patriots 3-0.
By the time the game was over, McGinness had amassed 18 saves, while Stormes and
Caitlin LaFountain led the Patriots offense as they combined for 7 shots, 5 of which were on goal. The Patriots face off next against East Region opponent, Potomac State College on Tuesday, September 9 at 4PM. The night game will be held at Phoenixville Area High School.
