After a quick 2-0 start the previous week, the women's volleyball team dropped three sets to East Region competitor, Cairn University. The Lady Patriots hosted the Highlanders and quickly fell behind early in all three sets to yield the match.
In all three sets the Lady Patriots hit waves of momentum, feeding into strong hits and creative digs. However the young team fell into the trap of playing safe to keep from causing unforced errors and played to the mercy of the Highlanders' attack.
In sets one and two the host school fell behind early, forcing a game of catch-up. Using the Highlander's errors to their advantage, the women came within several points of tying the game before the visitors cleaned up their game to take set one, 25-18 and set two, 25-17.
The quick tempo game got the best of VFCC in the third set as multiple unforced errors and miscommunication widened the gap in score. Every attempt the Lady Patriots put forth to gain ground was rejected by the Highlanders, who eventually grabbed the set 25-14.
Freshman
Gabrielle Martin let the frontline with five kills and two block assists.
Olivia Wireman grabbed 10 assists, two solo blocks and two service aces.
The women take the next two days to regroup before hosting Mount Aloysius, Saturday, September 6. The game is set for a 3PM start.
