A day after hosting their season opener, the women's soccer team had little time to recover as they prepared for their next home game against Notre Dame of Maryland University. It was a promising start as the Lady Patriots stayed with the Gators, holding off their shots and tying 1-1 at the half. Unfortunately, as the strain of back-to-back games and a short bench set in, the Lady Patriots gave way to fatigue and lost 1-8.
From the gate the Gators pressed the Lady Patriots, taking multiple shots within the first 10 minutes. Reforming their defensive line and anchored by goalkeeper
Amanda McGinness, VFCC managed to keep their net clear until the Gators found a hole and knocked the ball into the right corner to go up, 1-0.
Time continued to tick away and despite continual attacks, the Lady Patriots kept the visitors from scoring. With six minutes left to play in the first half,
Rachel Stormes made break and beat out several Gator defenders to make her way up toward the opponent's goal. A quick cross pass to
Caitlin LaFountain looked like a clear shot until the Gator's goalie made a dive for the ball. Maneuvering at the last second, LaFountain chipped the ball up and into the net to tie the game up and go into the break, 1-1.
The single goal would be the only celebration point for the Lady Patriots as the Gators came out harder than ever in the second half. Playing off of the tired host school, the Gators recorded seven more goals throughout the second stanza.
Amanda McGinness recorded 17 saves, while
Caitlin LaFountain notched her first goal of the season with an assist by
Rachel Stormes.
The team takes a few days to rest before their next match-up on Wednesday, September 3. The women will play host to Cedar Crest College at 4PM.
Go Patriots!
