PHOENIXVILLE, PA- The Valley Forge Christian College baseball team hosted University of Maine Presque Isle, Thursday, April 3. The game was held to a single due to weather, but left just enough time for the opposition to leave the Patriots without the win, defeating the host school, 13-1.
Three fielding errors in the first inning allowed the Owls to take the early 2-0 lead before the Patriots took their turn behind the plate.
Matt McKenzie waited patiently at bat and was rewarded with a walk before advancing to second base with a hit from
Josh Strohm. Now in scoring position, second baseman
James Comenzo ripped the ball through the left side, bringing McKenzie home and positioning himself at second base.
Jared Boothman followed the play by reaching first base after a fielding error from the Owl's pitcher.
Jonathan Manning continued the Patriots momentum with a hit just past the shortstop, loading up the bases with just one out working against the home team. The Owl's halted the Patriots progression, striking out the next two batters to maintain their 2-1 at the end of the first inning.
After a strong start, the Patriots failed to carry the momentum forward, resulting in just the single run at the bottom of the first. Continued Patriots fielding errors padded the Owl's lead, allowing them to gaining 11 more runs before the game was called on account of darkness.
The men travel for their next match-up, heading to Penn State Brandywine for a single game at 3:30pm.
Go Patriots!
