Women's Volleyball Honors Seniors With A Win!



PHOENIXVILLE, PA- The women's volleyball team hosted their final home game of the season taking on The King's College. For the past four years the Lady Tigers have denied Valley Forge a victory on Senior Day but that changed this year as the team rallied a three set win against The King's College!

At the start of the game, the team recognized Seniors Kayleigh Smith and Aubrie McQuown. Smith joined the team in 2012 and played outside hitter. McQuown entered as a freshman and moved from outside hitter to all-around player and finished as a middle blocker. McQuown and Smith were co-captains of the 2014 volleyball team.

Team played solid in set one, evening out their hits between Madison Arrowsmith, Aubrie McQuown and Kayleigh Smith. Jumping out to an early lead, the Lady Patriots continued to steam ahead and glided to a 25-14 victory!

The tide took a strong turn as the Lady Lions went on a 5-1 run with a series of strong serves. The Lady Patriots managed to get the ball back but couldn't pull their system together to catch up to the visitors. Continually battling their own mistakes, the Lady Patriots fell into a nine point deficit, 5-14. Needing something to pull the team out of the funk, Gabrielle Martin laid down several powerful hits to put the Lady Patriots back on track. Finding their stride, the team worked together to overcome the point gap and tie the Lady Lions, 19-19. Appearing to be unstoppable to team went on to overpower the visitors and take set two, 25-20.

Jumping ahead of themselves, the women appeared to be a little scrambled on the court and allowed the Lady Lions to take the lead in set three. The teams feuded back and forth, clamoring to get the edge. Coming down to the wire, the Lady Lions took a small lead, 19-20. Fighting back, the Lady Patriots used their serves to get the opponent out of system. Standing at 22-20, Valley Forge laid down the kill to be within just two points of victory. Missing their next serve the team felt The King's College bearing down on them. The Lady Lions missed their next serve and put the host school within one point of match victory. The rally went back and forth with both teams keeping the ball alive at all costs. Finally the Lady Patriots put up a perfect pass followed by a perfect set and Shelby Shepherd went up and finished off the ball to gain the set point, 25-23!

Kayleigh Smith led the team with 11 kills, followed by Gabrielle Martin with seven kills, two aces and a block. Olivia Wireman recorded 28 assists, six digs, three aces and two kills!

The team will compete in their final regular season games in a tri-match at Washington Adventist University. The matches are set for Tuesday, October 21.
