PHOENIXVILLE, PA- In their second to last home contest, the Patriots hosted The King's College, Saturday, October 20. Enduring one of their most physical games of the season, the Patriots battled for every ball and were rewarded with the 2-0 victory!
Valley Forge's
Selom Dodoh gave the Patriots the 1-0 lead at the 12:58. Trapping the long punt from goalie, Zachary Barbieri, Dodoh maneuvered around the opposing defenders to knock the ball toward the Lion's goal. Hitting the post, the team held their breath for a brief second before celebrating as the ball shot backward and into the net.
The Patriot's defense went to work, protecting their end of the field and allowing their goalie,
Zach Barbieri, to be tested just three times. Continuing to frustrate the Lion's attackers,
Preston Saunders,
Selom Dodoh and
Ezana Asrate collaborated to regularly place the ball in Lions territory.
The Patriots carried their 1-0 lead into the locker room and felt the pressure of the Lion's intensity as the second stanza got underway. The physicality of the game increased as the Patriots looked to extend their lead and the Lions looked to tie the game. At the 65
th minute,
Selom Dodoh added a buffer, scoring his second goal of the game, putting the Patriots up, 2-0. Racing his way up the field, Dodoh attempted to draw the Lion's goalie out but the Lions goalie wouldn't budge. Realizing he had the advantage, Dodoh inched closer and closer to the goalie until a last second chip to the right made its way past the Lion's goalkeeper and into the right corner for the goal. Continuing to clear the ball away from their zone, the Patriots denied the Lion's at every turn and walked off the field with their first shutout!
Zach Barbieri, Patriot sophomore goalkeeper, earned his first clean sheet of the season, making eight saves.
The team recorded 18 shots with 11 being on target.
The Patriots turn right around and travel to Penn State Brandywine, Sunday, October 19, for their final road trip of the season.
Go Patriots!
