Doylestown, Pa. - On Thursday, April 4, 2013, the Valley Forge Christian College men's baseball team lost both ends of their double header road match-up against Delaware Valley College.
The Patriots fell by a score of 10-1 in Game 1. The game remained relatively close through three and a half innings. The Patriots were able to put a run on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth, to make it 3-1. However, in the bottom of the fourth, Delaware Valley College was able to extend their lead considerably. A combination of errors and singles added 5 unearned runs, increasing the deficit, 8-1. A Delaware Valley homerun with a runner on base in the bottom of the fifth secured the final tally of 10-1.
The Patriots' top pitcher, sophomore
Josh Strohm, pitched a complete 7-inning contest. Strohm struck out seven batters, walked three, but also gave up 12 hits.
Offensively, it was a fairly quiet game for the Patriots. Jacob Moritz,
Jared Boothman, and Michael Fiore each recorded hits for the Patriots.
In Game 2, the Patriots lost by a score of 11-3. Freshman
Jared Boothman was the starting pitcher for the Patriots. In a little over four innings, Boothman struck out three batters, walked four, and gave up seven hits. Similar to Game 1, the Patriots were able to keep the game close for a few innings. They trailed 3-2 after three innings. Delaware Valley College's big inning came in the fifth, as they were able to add six runs to the scoreboard for an 11-2 advantage. The Patriots tacked on a run in the seventh, but weren't able to stage any kind of a true come-from-behind effort.
Offensively, the Patriots had a little more success in Game 2 than they did in Game 1, but Delaware Valley College's pitching still proved to be solid. Sophomore
Bryce Koch earned two hits and an RBI. Sophomore Michael Fiore also recorded a hit and an RBI. Samuel Sheesley and
Jared Boothman each tallied a hit.
Delaware Valley College improved to an 11-10 overall record.
With the two losses to Delaware Valley, the Patriots dropped to a 0-12 regular season record and are still searching for their first win of 2013.
The Patriots hope to add a tally mark in the win column Monday, April 8, during their double header road match-up against Penn State Schuylkill.
