Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Patriots Drop Region Game

LANCASTER, PA- The Valley Forge Christian College women's basketball team traveled to Lancaster Bible College to compete against the Lady Chargers, February 7, 2013.  The heated history between these two teams was evident as both competed fiercely for the victory.  Although the Patriots were up by six at the half, the Chargers came back to seize the win, 46-49.

The Patriots played an excellent first half, capitalizing on nearly every offensive possession.  The ladies were able to stay on top despite a tough Chargers' defense.  With two minutes remaining in the first period, the Patriots held a 10-point lead (31-21).  Unfortunately, back-to-back fouls from Vanity Jones and Morgan Godwin allowed the Chargers to step up to the foul-line and make good on all four attempts, cutting the Patriots' lead to six.  The score would be 31-25 going into halftime.

The Chargers opened up the second half with a vigor not seen in the first.  The Patriots struggled defensively and saw their lead slip away as the Chargers went on a 13-0 run.  With 12:47 left the Patriots were trailing by seven (31-38).  Determined to not go down without a fight, the Patriots worked as a team to cut the Chargers lead to two (38-40) with 7:23 to go!  The next five minutes were intense as both teams traded baskets, but the Chargers would start to pull away.  With just under a minute to go, Vanity Jones was brought to the foul-line.  Making good on both foul-shots, the Patriots were now three points away from tying (46-49).  The Chargers looked to secure the victory but missed an easy jump-shot to give the ball back to the Patriots.  As Vanity Jones took the ball down the court, an unfortunate turnover left the Patriots with no other choice than to foul to slow down the game.  Chargers' Lauren Heliger stepped up the charity stripe to take the one-and-one shot.  Missing the basket, the Patriots went up strong and grabbed the defensive rebound. With one chance left to tie, Amanda Reich attempted a three-pointer.   The ball hit the rim and rolled off just as time expired, giving the victory to the Chargers.

The Patriots shot 46% in the first half but dropped to 21% in the second, while Chargers' shot 36% in the first and 34% in the second half.  The Patriots were able to out-rebound the Chargers, 34-30.  The game came down to free-throws, with the Patriots going 5-9 and the Chargers going 10-14.

Senior Amanda Compton notched another double-double on the season, scoring 18 points and grabbing 15 rebounds.

Vanity Jones scored 12 points and had eight rebounds, in addition to four assists and four steals.

Morgan Godwin recorded nine points and two steals, and Amanda Reich scored seven points, two rebounds and one steal.

The Patriots take the weekend to rest before travelling to Langhorne, Pa., Monday, February 11, to compete against Cain University.  The Patriots take on the Highlanders at 6pm and compete for number two seed in the NCCAA II East Region.
