PHOENIXVILLE, PA- The women's volleyball team played a strong serving game against Washington Adventist University, Tuesday, October 8. Aces combined with aggressive net play and solid defense pushed the Lady Patriots over the Shock in three sets with final scores of 25-17, 25-4, and 25-21!
As the first set go underway, the Lady Patriots encountered a much more aggressive Shock team than three weeks before when VFCC swept Washington Adventist in three sets. Playing without their libero, the Patriots took longer than desired to play in-sync with one another and allowing the Shock to trail right behind them. After a quick timeout from the home bench, the Patriots regrouped and attacked from the net and service line to capture set one, 25-17.
Taking their momentum into set two, junior
Kayleigh Smith unleashed an arsenal of power serves, to push the Patriots to an incomprehensible 16-0 run. Smith grabbed nine aces within the 16 straight points. Riding the emotional high of service aces, the Patriots moved as one on the court to perfectly set up their offense and catch the Shock in transition to capture set two, 25-4.
The ladies became a bit too comfortable with their two-set lead and committed multiple unforced errors to open the door for the Shock to tie several times early in set three. As the 25
th point came into sight for both team, the Patriots stepped up their game refusing to lose. The combination of strategic attacks from freshman Katie Clark and solid defense from senior libero
Courtney Farabee brought the Patriots out of the woods and solidify the third set and the match, 25-21.
"We played a great second set with so much heart and determination. Since we are so young offensively, each game we need to continually remind ourselves to fight each point at a time and just focus on the set we are in. I was proud of the team play and the way the girls got back into the game" stated Head Coach Amanda Gauthier.
Katie Clarke recorded nine kills, one ace and one block,
Kayleigh Smith had an impressive nine aces, four kills and three digs.
Carli Kile notched 15 assists and four aces while
Aubrie McQuown grabbed six kills on the night.
The Patriots take the week to practice and rest before hosting Central Penn College on Tuesday, October 15. This is the first meeting between the two teams. The game is set to start at 7 pm!
Go Patriots!
