READING, PA- The men's soccer team was edged out on the road by the Penn State Berks Nittany Lions 1-4, Monday, October 14. While the Patriots were able to hold the host school to just one goal in the first half, blunders in the second half allowed the Lions to jump ahead and out of the Patriots reach.
In the first stanza of the game, the Patriots played a tight game, moving the ball around and closing the holes on defense to keep the Lions from scoring. At the 18-minute mark, Lion's Justin Bass caught the Patriot's defense too far forward and chipped the ball right over the defensive line to create an open shot for his teammate and put the Lions up, 0-1. Correcting their error the Patriots held the host school to the single goal until halftime.
Into the second stanza, the Lions managed to play-off of the Patriots errors and record two more goals within a ten minute slot. At the 67th-minute, Patriots midfielder Jonathan Hadinger received a perfect throw-in from Jonathan Manning to head the ball right over the keeper and into the back of the goal. The Patriots were now down just 1-3 with 23 minutes left to play. While the Patriots created opportunities to score, there were not enough of them to overcome the score deficit. The Lions would score once more with less than four minutes to play to close the book on the Patriots and take the game, 1-4.
"We created a few scoring chances but just not enough. Aaron Bishop, Matt McKenzie, Jon Manning and Jonathan Hadinger all had a solid game. There was great improvement all around" reported Head Coach Vernon Dorsey.
Goalkeeper Robert Taylor recorded 14 saves for the game while Jonathan Hadinger had four shots on goal and one goal.
The men's soccer team travels to Bethlehem, Pa to play host school Moravian College. The game is set to start at 3:30 pm.Â
