Men's Basketball Downed by Rowan

Box Score

PHOENIXVILLE, PA
- The VFCC men's basketball team was handed their second loss in a row, and first home loss of the 2011-2012 season, by the Profs of Rowan University on Tuesday (Feb. 7) by a final score of 86-82.

After a back-and-forth first few minutes, Rowan University began to pull away from the Patriots, leading by as many as seven with 3:44 left to play in the first half.  Senior Michael Stum sank his only three-pointer of the game on the Patriots next trip down the court, and after draining four consecutive free throws from Stum and junior Donnell Davis, the score was knotted at 36-36 with just under three minutes to play in the half.  Both teams vied for the halftime lead, but a tip-in by Patriot freshman Kevin Mack gave the two point advantage to Valley Forge (42-40).

Just after the halftime break, the Patriots thought they would get some breathing room during a 10-1 run during the first few minutes of the second, however Rowan would quickly regain composure and bring themselves back to within one (56-55) with 13:44 remaining.  Senior Latrell Alford rattled off the next five Patriot's points after sinking two free throws and finishing off the bonus on a hard Rowan foul.  The Patriots continued to lead, trading buckets with the Profs, until Rowan's Matt Whitworth drained one of his game high four made three-pointers.  Rowan stole the energy out of the "Pit" gymnasium and carried their momentum to the final buzzer to hold on for the victory.

Rowan University held the advantage from the field, outshooting the Patriots 45 percent to 38 percent, including hitting 9-of-20 (45%) from beyond the arc to VFCC's 3-of-9 (33%).  The Patriots dominated the boards, out rebounding the Profs 45-25, including grabbing 26 defensive rebounds and limiting Rowan to just 5 offensive boards.

Leading the way for the Patriots tonight was senior Latrell Alford who finished with a game highs in points scored (25) and rebounds (11).  Alford added 2 blocked shots and a steal in his 38 minutes played.

Senior Michael Stum finished with 18 points and 7 rebounds.

Junior Donnell Davis and freshman Kevin Mack each finished with 10 points scored.  Davis also added 6 rebounds and 4 assists to his season tally.

Senior Justin Kinsey finished with 9 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists, after leaving the game shortly after halftime for precautionary reasons.

Rowan's offense was led tonight by Kendall White (20), Rich McNamara (16), Jason Rosenberg (12) and Matt Whitworth (12).  White also finished with a team high 7 rebounds, while Rosenberg tallied game highs in both assists (8) and steals (3).

The Patriots will next host Philadelphia Biblical University on Thursday (Feb. 9) in an NCCAA II East Region showdown with playoff standings implications.  Game time is scheduled for 8:00 PM, immediately following the Lady Patriots game also against PBU.
