PHOENIXVILLE, PA - The Valley Forge Christian College men's basketball team defeated Rutgers-Camden University, 76-60, on Monday (Feb. 7).
Through the first 20 minutes, the Patriots played great defensively. Aside from the easy buckets they gave up due to turnovers, the Patriots really limited Rutgers-Camden's scoring.
However, Rutgers-Camden came out aggressively in the second half. They pressed and trapped their way right back into the basketball game. The managed to cut their deficit to 10 points (65-55), but could never get under double-digits. They managed to squeeze 21 turnovers out of the Patriots, which they were able to convert into 25 points.
The Patriots hope to become more efficient in limiting their turnovers as the season draws to a conclusion, a statistical category that has gone up and down over the past month.
On a very positive note, the Patriots had one of their best performances of the season from the free-throw line, sinking 23-of-26 tries (88.5 percent).
The Patriots also dominated the boards, 35-17.
Michael Stum had a tremendous performance with 18 points, 11 rebounds, five steals, and four blocked shots.
Shawn Taylor was a huge lift off the bench. Taylor finished with a near double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. Taylor also tacked on a pair of blocked shots.
Steve Sims led the team in assists with four.
James Franklin earned three assists and two steals.
Donnell Davis added three assists.
The Patriots' next contest is against The College of New Jersey in Ewing, NJ on Wednesday (Feb. 8).
