Men's Basketball Starts 2011-2012 Season Strong

Box Score

GRAYSON, KY
- The VFCC men's basketball team opened their 2011-2012 season with a two-point, 66-64 victory over the College of the Ozarks in day one of the Super 8 Classic, hosted by Kentucky Christian College. The Patriots' first win of the season over College of the Ozarks was an impressive one. Currently, College of the Ozarks is ranked #12 in Division 1 of the NAIA, and returned with a strong team from last season's NAIA Final Four appearance.  Valley Forge held an 11 point halftime lead, and was very comfortable on both sides of the ball.  That comfort almost got the best of them, as College of the Ozarks outscored the Patriots 40-33 in the second half, and almost came away with the victory.  Senior Michael Stum (Manheim, PA, Manheim Central High School) led all scorers 18 points, followed by sophmore Isaac Ransom (East Barre, VT, Websterville Baptist Christian School) who added 10 points of his own.  For the game, the Patriots were better than 50% from the field, but were out rebounded 34-25.  Senior Latrell Alford (Crisfield, MD, Crisfield Senior High School) added three steals defensively, while junior Steve Sims (Willow Grove, PA, Abington High School) led all players with 7 assists on the night.

The Valley Forge Christian College men's basketball team found success on the second night of Kentucky Christian University's Super 8 Classic. On Friday, the Patriots defeated the host team, Kentucky Christian, 82-56.  The Patriots put up an impressive 47 points in the first half, to KCU's 28, and they would seal the deal with a strong second half as well.  Statistically, both teams were very much even-up, and it was KCU's less than accurate shooting percentage; 30% from the floor, that would seal the deal for the Patriots.  Leading the way for the Patriots were sophmore Isaac Ransom with 17 points, including shooting 4-of-7 from beyond the arc, and Mike Stum who added 14 points of his own.

After last season's loss to Grace Bible College in the NCCAA II National Championship game, Valley Forge was chomping at the bit for redemption on Saturday night (Nov. 12) in their final game of the Super   8 Classic.  The men's basketball team was also looking to start the season 3-0 for the first time since the 2007-2008 season. The Patriots came out swinging against Grace Bible, who currently holds the number one spot in the NCCAA Divison II. Valley Forge controlled the game for the first 32 minutes, even holding as much as an 19 point lead at one point, and a double digit margin for most of the game. But a baskeball game doesn't end at the 32-minute mark, and Grace Bible was able to claw their way back to a tie game with under a minute to play. Patriots senior Mike Stum broke a 72-72 tie with 24 seconds to play, but the Tigers came right back down the court and hit a big three-pointer to tie the game again at 75. Grace Bible was able to capitalize off a blocked layup in the waning seconds, and after a long outlet pass, were sent to the free throw line after a VFCC foul. The Tigers sank both shots, and with 1.7 seconds remaining, Valley Forge was off the mark on a half court desperation heave.  GBC stole the win from the VFCC 77-75.  With tonight's loss, the Patriots also lost out on an opportunity to end the Tigers' record setting 62 consecutive NCCAA II victories.

For the game, VFCC outshot GBC by just a single bucket, and were only out rebounded by three boards, by it was the charity stripe that would seal the victory for Grace as the shot an impressive 17-for-25 from the line, while VFCC only sank 11 of their 18 attempts.  Several Patriots scored in double digits against GBC's tough defensive scheme, with sophmore Isaac Ransom (who also shot 4-for-6 from three-point land) and junior Donnell Davis (Chesapeake, VA, Calvary Christian School System)leading the way, both with 16 points.  Seniors Latrell Alford and Mike Stum followed with 14 points and 13 points respectively.

The Patriots will look to rebound from this tough loss on Thursday (Nov. 17) when they host Multmomah University (Portland, OR) in the first game of the 2011 Hersha Hospitality Classic at the VFCC "Pit" gymnasium.  The Patriots will then host NCCAA II Midwest school Ohio Christian University on Friday (Nov. 18), and will look to close out the tournament on Saturday (Nov. 20) with their second win of the season over Kentucky Christian University.
