Langhorne, PA – In the second game of the back-to-back series match-up, the University of Valley Forge Women's Basketball team cruised to a 59-47 road win. In the win, senior
Amaya Brown (Trenton, NJ) lead the way with 17 points, and 7 rebounds. Brown shot 7-17 from the field, and 3-7 from the line. With two double-digit performances, Brown is now averaging 16 points per game.
Freshmen
Mariah Matthews (Baltimore, MD) earned her first double-digit game of her career, netting 14 points and leading the Patriots with 4 steals.
Shaelynn Newborn (Endicott, NY) tallied 10 points, followed by freshman
Kaionna Hanna (Las Vegas, NV) with 6 points.
"I think we took a big step forward after making some adjustments from Friday's game,"
Gretchen LeVan shared. "We are starting to trust one another and build chemistry on the court; I am proud of this young team in how they responded and bounced back from the loss."
Valley Forge started out on top with back-to-back buckets from Newborn and Matthews.
Elizabeth Davis (San Jose, CA) would add to the Patriots small lead with a three-ball. The Highlanders quickly found themselves in a 1-point ball game after two lay-ups and a jumper. However, after a trey from Newborn, a jumper from Hanna, and a pair of free-throws and three-pointer from Matthews, the Patriots were up 19-8. With a little over two minutes remaining, Cairn closed out the quarter with a jumper and three-ball from Markie Watson to only trail the Patriots by 7.
The second-quarter was slow for both teams, with the Patriots only scoring 6 points, and the Highlanders collecting 8.
With a short lead of 5 points entering the third, the Patriots offense heated up, outscoring the Highlanders 23-10. In the third-quarter alone, Valley Forge shot 9-15 from the field (60%), 3-4 from behind the arc (75%), and 2-5 from the stripe (40%).
Although Cairn outscored Valley Forge 16-10 in the fourth-quarter, the Patriots held momentum to take home their first win of the season with a 59-47 final score.
Valley Forge collected a season-high 14 steals and 13 assists. The Patriots secured 25 points off of 32 forced Highlander turnovers.
The Patriots will be back in action Friday, February 19
th as they host the Defenders of Clarks Summit University for a 6 p.m. tip-off. No spectators will be permitted.
