Chambersburg, PA – The University of Valley Forge Women's Basketball team traveled to Chambersburg, PA to face the Phoenix of Wilson College on President's Day. The Patriots went out hot in their last away game, bringing home a 20-point victory.
Cayleen Conrad paced the Patriots in scoring with 27 points, while adding 4 assists and 4 steals.
Amaya Brown notched an additional 18 points with 4 assists and 4 steals. Going into the last contest of the season, Brown is averaging 14.2 points per game. Senior
Shania Walker had her second double-digit game of the season, and her first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 12 boards.
"It certainly felt great to get a win today,"
Gretchen LeVan shared. "It speaks volumes about the character of these ladies; when you are losing tough fought games, and teammates having injuries, it can be difficult to stay motivated and ready to play. These girls do that every game – they are relentless. Amaya and Cayleen had another great outing, as did Senior Shy Walker with her first career double-double."
The Patriots turned heads as they tipped off with an 18-2 run. Valley Forge kept up the pace, only allowing the Phoenix to score 6 in the first-quarter. After collecting 5 three-pointers in just the first stanza, Valley Forge held a 28-6 lead.
Early in the second, Wilson jumped to an early 10-2 rally. After a series of free-throws, the Phoenix cut the Patriots lead to 12 at the half.
The third-quarter began in favor of the Phoenix as they slowly cut the Patriots lead to a short 6 points. Valley Forge re-grouped with a pair of free-throws from
Cayleen Conrad, a few jumpers from
Amaya Brown and
Shania Walker, and a
Cayleen Conrad three ball to end the third with a 13-point advantage.
After
Amaya Brown popped a three to start the final quarter, the Patriots didn't look back.
Shania Walker showed out, collecting 6 points out of her 10 total. Valley Forge held their lead closely, claiming the 71-51 road victory.
Valley Forge forced 21 turnovers, and outrebounded the Phoenix 49-40.
As a team, the Patriots hit 23-69 from the field (33.3%), 9-27 from behind the arc (33.3%), and 16-19 from the line (84.2%).
Valley Forge will wrap up their season at home as they welcome the Nittany Lions of Penn State Mont Alto to Phoenixville on Wednesday, February 19
th for 7 p.m tip.
