Lions Pull Away from Patriots

Phoenixville, PA – With a few Patriot injuries, the Nittany Lions of Penn State Brandywine took a 70-52 victory over Valley Forge on Thursday evening.

Amaya Brown took over the offense for the Patriots, posting a new career-high 32 points. Brown hit 12-20 from the field, and a career-high 8-11 from three-point land. Brown was followed by Cayleen Conrad who was just shy of a double-double with 9 points and 9 boards.

This was certainly another frustrating loss," head coach Gretchen LeVan shared. "I thought Amaya Brown has her best game of the season despite the loss. Frustrating fouls and poor overall offensive execution stopped us from playing our game."

The contest began in favor of the Nittany Lions as the Patriots took their time finding any sort of groove on the court. Brandywine found a 12-point lead until Amaya Brown and Cayleen Conrad sparked a last-minute comeback with a pair of jumpers and a three-ball to come within 5 at the end of the first-quarter.

The second-quarter was an even finish as both squads tallied 15 points each. Valley Forge shot their best in the second stanza, hitting 6-14 from the field (42.9%), and 3-7 from behind the arc (42.9%).

Down by 5, the Patriots showed an aggressive start as they chipped the Lions lead to 3. However, the Lions would capture a 14-point lead as they outscored the Patriots 21-12.

The Lions didn't look back as they limited the Patriots offense to a short 22.2% from the field (4-18). Brandywine took a 22-point advantage with 6:10 remaining, their largest lead of the contest. Amaya Brown drained three trey balls back-to-back to come within 15 but the Patriots would run out of time as the Lions closed out the contest with an 18-point lead.

Brandywine posted a 57-38 advantage on rebounds, collecting 15 points off of second-chance opportunities.

As a team, the Patriots shot 30.3% from the field (20-66), 27.8% from the three (10-36), and 40% from the line (2-5).

The Patriots will continue their play at home on Saturday, February 15th as they welcome conference opponent SUNY-Delhi for Senior Day at 2 p.m.
