Langhorne, PA – The University of Valley Forge Men's Basketball team traveled to Cairn University on Tuesday evening. The Patriots were able to cut the Highlander lead to 4 late but were unable to complete the comeback as Valley Forge fell to Cairn by a final score of 78-71.
To start the game, Cairn quickly jumped out to a 9-0 lead. The Patriots put a stop to the Highlander scoring run when
Bennie Howard Jr. made a layup at the 13:58 mark in the first half. After getting a stop on the defensive end,
Cody Collins hit 1 of his 3 three-pointers to make the score 9-5 in favor of Cairn. The Highlanders shot 47% from the field in the first half on their way to building a 20-point first half lead. Valley Forge was able to cut into the Cairn lead and close out the first half with a last second three from
Sean Word. Word's three made the score 40-25 at the half.
Down by as many as 23 midway through the second half, Valley Forge could have easily packed it up and called it a night. That's not something this team has done nor was it about to start doing. With 10:17 left on the clock, UVF started to gain confidence and knock down shots.
Sean Word started the Patriots comeback with a layup. Word's layup sparked a 17-5 Patriot's scoring run that was capped off by a long trey from
Aaron Hill. UVF's
Aaron Hill went off in the second half. Hill scored 22 of his 28 points in the second frame. Hill reeled of the Patriot's next 8 points to bring the deficit to single digits for the first time since early in the first half. After trading buckets,
Cody Collins rose up and drained a three with 3:00 minutes left to bring the Patriots to within 6.
Aaron Hill continued to torch the Highlanders with his hot shooting. Hill tickled the twine with two more threes that brought the Patriots all the way back from being down by 23 to a deficit of just 4. Unfortunately, the Patriots were unable to finish off the big comeback against their longtime foe and fell by a final score of 78-71.
