Phoenixville, PA – The Patriot's Women's Basketball team played host to the Cyclones of Centenary University on Monday evening. Winners of their last 5 of 6 games, the Patriots were looking to even up their season record against the Cyclones. In a game that included 9 lead changes, Valley Forge was able to pull away late to earn their 9th win of the year by a final score of 52-47.
Offensively the Patriots were led by senior
Jhanel Brown (Westmoreland, VA) who had 17 points and 16 rebounds. Junior
Carlee Conrad (Pine Grove, PA) added 13 points for UVF.
There wasn't much separation between the two teams throughout the first quarter. Centenary was clinging to a 1-point lead with under a minute in the quarter until UVF's
Alea Flowers dribbled into the paint to make a layup. Flowers layup plus a last second jumper from
Amaya Brown put the Patriots on top 17-14 after one quarter of play.
Valley Forge increased their lead early in the second quarter when
Jhanel Brown grabbed an offensive rebound and put the ball back up and in. After forcing a Cyclone turnover,
Amaya Brown found
Kaitlyn Hess wide open. Hess nailed a jumper to push the Patriot lead to 7. Centenary then used a 6-0 run over the course of 4 minutes to cut the UVF lead to 21-20. With 3:10 on the clock, the Patriot's
Alea Flowers was able to cut through the Cyclone defense a second time and lay the ball softly off the glass and into the basket.
Cayleen Conrad followed with a jumper on the Patriot's next possession to stretch the lead back to 5. The momentum continued to swing back and forth and Cententary used it to their advantage just before the half. The Cyclones closed out the half with a 6-0 run to give them a 26-25 lead at intermission.
The back and forth play carried over into the third quarter. Centenary held a 4-point lead with 30 seconds remaining in the quarter. With the clock ticking down,
Jhanel Brown grabbed another offensive rebound and got her shot off before the horn sounded. The ball fell through the hoop for the buzzer beater. Valley Forge trailed 39-37 after three periods of play.
Trailing by 2 with 8:00 minutes remaining on the clock, UVF's
Amaya Brown stepped into a three and hit nothing but net to give Valley Forge a 1-point lead. Brown's three sparked a 12-2 that gave the Patriots an 8-point lead with only .22 seconds left in the ball game. The Patriot's scoring run came at a perfect time and it would seal the game for Valley Forge.
