Phoenixville, PA – On an exceptional Saturday afternoon, the University of Valley Forge Women's Soccer team celebrated their last match of the 2019 season with Senior Day. On top of four seniors being honored for their playing career, the Patriots also claimed a 4-1 victory over the Knights of Central Penn College.
With a welcoming and rowdy crowd, the Patriots offense broke open, dishing out 17 shot attempts in just the first-half. However, Valley Forge would find the back of the net with a score from
Cayleen Conrad in the 23
rd minute, creating a 1-0 lead.
As the Patriots entered the second-half with a 1-0 advantage, Valley Forge would extend their lead with a goal from
Haven Mayhew, assisted by
Cayleen Conrad. Mayhew would add to her stat sheet with another goal in the 60
th minute of play, forming a now 3-0 gain. However, the Knights would not go down without a fight as they would score a short two minutes later, changing the score to 3-1. Central Penn would attempt to continue their offensive spurt but Mayhew would gather ball control, navigate her way through the Knights defense and score her third goal of the afternoon at 65:50. With Conrad's goal and Mayhew's hat trick, the Patriots defeated the Knights with a final score of 4-1.
"We were able to show up strong in the second-half with a hat trick from Mayhew," associate head coach
Kelsey Morrison shared. "We showed grit, and put our strength of character on display. I am proud of the fight that this group displayed throughout the season and specifically on Senior Day."
The Patriots tallied a 38-18 benefit on shot attempts, and a 12-1 on corner kicks. Keeper
Ashley Depointe produced seven saves on the match, for a total of 120 on the season.
With the win, the Patriots end their 2019 campaign with a 5-10 overall record.
