New Rochelle, NY – The University of Valley Forge Men's Basketball team lost to The College of New Rochelle Blue Angels in double overtime 110-104 on Saturday afternoon.
Offensively the Patriots (3-12) were led by senior
Alex Sanchez who had 31 points and 5 rebounds. Senior
Emanuel Toms added 16 points and junior
Sean Word had 11 points and 9 rebounds. Sophomore
Arthur Wilborn had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Blue Angels (13-7) were led on offense by Hunter Schenkel (24), Elijah Harris (22), and Kobe Telford (21).
After trailing 3-0 in the early stages of the first half, the Patriots went on an 11-0 run to take an 11-3 lead. CNR closed the Valley Forge lead to just 1 after a 3 by the Blue Angel's Elijah Harris, but a 13-2 Patriots run quickly pushed their lead back into double digits with 8:00 minutes left in the first half. The Blue Angels cut the UVF lead to 5 lead thanks to Hunter Schenkel. Valley Forge led at the half by a score of 41-36.
The Blue Angels started the second quarter with a 12-5 run that would tie the game at 51 with 15 minutes left in regulation. Both teams continued to trade buckets until the Patriots were able to separate themselves on the scoreboard.
Alex Sanchez knocked down 4 free throws on back to back Patriot possessions that would give UVF an 8 point lead. The fouls began to mount for Valley Forge. CNR took advantage of being sent to the free throw line. New Rochelle knocked down all 5 free throw attempts inside 3 minutes to play and with just under a minute left, the Blue Angels tied the game at 92 on a layup from Jaylin Gray. Both teams had chances to seal the win but were unable to take advantages their opportunities. At the end of the 2
nd half we were all knotted up at 92.
The Patriots scored the first 4 points of overtime after
Todd James made 1 of 2 free throws and
Emanuel Toms nailed a three. With three and a half minutes left in OT, UVF led 96-92. A 6-0 run quickly gave the lead to CNR. The Patriots,
Cody Collins would hit a monster 3 inside 1:00 to play to give the Patriots a 99-98 lead. On the New Rochelle next possession Jaylin Gray made 1 of 2 free throws to tie the game at 99. A last second 3 from the Patriot's Rafael Smith just missed and we were heading to a second OT.
The second OT proved to be too much. The Patriots only managed 5 points compared to CNR's 11. Foul trouble ultimately did the Patriots in. The Blue Angels went on to win a hard fought game by a score of 110-104.
