Patriots Split With Defenders

Myrtle Beach, SC - The University of Valley Forge Baseball team continued its play at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, SC.  The Patriots took on a familiar foe in the Clarks Summit University Defenders.  The Patriots picked up their first win of the year by beating the Defenders in the first game by a score of 13-9.  UVF dropped game two by a score of 15-1.  


Game 1

The Patriots got on the board in the top of the 1st inning.  After Cody Rak singled to score Jacob Johnson, Jeffery Espinal crushed a double to left that brought home James Jackson.  The Defenders answered back with a run in the bottom of the 1st inning.  Valley Forge led 2-1 after the 1st inning.
In the top of the 3rd inning and bases loaded for Valley Forge, Ricky Romero found the right center gap that cleared the bases.  Romero's double gave the Patriots a 5-1 lead after three innings of play. 

Valley Forge picked up their 6th run of the game when Jeffery Espinal singled home Darryl Ivester.  With the Patriots leading 6-1, Clarks Summit came storming back.  The Defenders picked up a run in the bottom of the 4th and 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th.  Suddenly the score was tied 6-6 entering the 6th inning. 

UVF continued to fight back.  After a Cody Rak walk and a Jeffery Espinal single.  Both Rak and Espinal advanced when the Clarks Summit pitcher was called for a balk.  With runners on 2nd and 3rd and 1 out, Landyn Traffas hit a deep sacrifice fly that scored Cody RakMarcus Fultz then singled to score Espinal and Ricky Romero Jr. picked up his 4th RBI of the game when he singled home Fultz.  The Patriots retook the lead with the score 9-6.  Just like the Patriots however, the Defenders would not go down quietly.  In the bottom of the 6th, Clarks Summit came back and scored 3 runs to retie the game at 9-9. 

In the top of the 7th inning, and 1 out, UVF got back to back singles from Jacob Johnson and James JacksonCody Rak then doubled to right that scored Johnson and Jackson.  Landyn Traffas  then tripled that scored Rak.  With Traffas on 3rd, he broke for home when the Clarks Summit pitcher went into his wind up.   In one of the most exciting plays of the game , Traffas stole home to give the Patriots a 4-run inning to take a 13-9 lead. 

The Patriots shut down the Defender offense in the bottom of the 7th to give UVF their first win of the season.  UVF won by a final score of 13-9.

Cody Rak got the win and went 2-3 at the plate with a single, double and 3 RBI's
Jeffery Espinal was 3-4 with 2 singles , a double and 2 RBI's
Ricky Romero Jr. went 2-4 with a single, a double and 4 RBI's
 
Game 2

The Patriots ran out of steam in game 2.  Clarks Summit scored runs in the 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th inning.  The Patriots only managed to push across 1 run in game 2.  UVF took the game two loss by a final score of 15-1.   

Up Next
The Patriots will finish their trip in Myrtle Beach on Friday, March 10th when they play against Benedict College.  Game time is set for 6:00 pm.
