Middletown, CT - The University of Valley Forge Women's basketball team traveled to Middletown, Connecticut to take part in the Wesleyan tournament at Wesleyan University. Valley Forge's first contest came against the Owls of Westfield State University. The Patriots would lose by a score of 95-65.

After the first six and a half minutes of play, the Patriots kept the game close thanks to efforts by
Jhanel Brown and
Bailey Mayforth, combining for 10 of the Patriots 11 points. In a tight 14-11 game, it was very apparent the Patriots would need a strong showing from their defense to stay in the game. It was tough sledding for the squad that let up 10 points in the last three minutes, giving the Owls a 24-13 lead at the end of the first.

The second quarter would provide no relief for the Patriots, as the squad would commit 14 more turnovers, adding to a staggeringly high first quarter total of 15, for a half total of 29. The Patriots continued to battle on, with an encouraging 7-2 run in the middle of the 2
nd. Valley Forge fell behind at the end of the first half 54-33.

Although Valley Forge out scored the Owls in the third quarter, the Patriots could not recover from the deficit, as Westfield State methodically scored in the third and fourth quarter, with 17 and 20 points, respectively. Valley Forge would add 17 more turnovers throughout the second half, leading to the 95-65 defeat. The Patriots find themselves with a 1-4 in the early goings of their season.

A Look at the Numbers
Jhanel Brown led the Patriots in scoring with 21 points, followed by
Bailey Mayforth with 12 points. Westfield State shot 32.5% from the field, while Valley Forge was good 36% of the time. Valley Forge committed 46 turnovers on the day.
