BRYN MAWR, PA- "It was ugly, but a win is a win. Contrary to LBC's 2nd quarter, last night it was our strongest quarter in which we won 17 to 8. We had balanced team rebounding, shot well from the line, and executed shots when we needed to down the stretch. We always struggle shooting wise in their gym from 3 (just 19% for the game), but we figured out how to still come out on top. In comparative stats we are fairly even teams." Those were the words of Head Coach
Gretchen LeVan, after a 50-46 victory over Bryn Mawr Wednesday night, one night after a 22 point loss to Lancaster Bible College.
If you looked at the comparative stats, points per game, field goal percentage, 3 point percentage, etc., the teams seem closely matched, and it would figure to be a good game on paper.
The Patriots were first to score, one minute into the game on a layup by
Mikala Brinson off of a fast break. The scoring would go back and forth, and with 2:38 remaining was knotted at 13-13. The Owls would go on a 4-0 run to end the quarter and lead 17-13.
The Owls opened up the 2
nd quarter with a steal followed by a jumper to extend their lead to 6. At the 6:48 mark, that lead was up to 8. The Patriots would cut that lead to 1 with 3:53 left before the half when
Gabbi Rodriguez hit a jumper making it 24-25. Bryn Mawr would miss a few shots, and then it was
Mikala Brinson pulling the Patriots ahead 26-25 with a layup with 1:25 left. The Patriots extended that to a 5 point, 30-25 lead going into the half.
The 3
rd quarter started, and the Patriots would extend their lead to 11 with 5:03 left in the 3
rd when
Jhanel Brown made a layup. The Patriots did not score the rest of the quarter, and gave the Owls the opportunity to creep back in. After 3, the lead was cut to 6, 39-33.
The 4
th quarter did not start off good for the Patriots. After not scoring the final 5 minutes of the 3
rd, they started off with a turnover, followed by a good jumper from the Owls, cutting the lead to 4. The Owls would then tie the game 43-43 with 6:32 remaining.
Bailey Mayforth would answer right back with a 3, and then
Jhanel Brown with a layup making the lead 5. Then nearly 4 minutes would go by without either team scoring. It wasn't until
Jhanel Brown was fouled with :47 seconds left and hit her first free throw. The Patriots would hold on for the 4 point, 50-46 victory.
With the win, the Patriots improve to 6-7 on the season.
Mikala Brinson lead with 16 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists.
Jhanel Brown had 15 points and 8 rebounds.
The Patriots will look to move back to the .500 mark when they travel to Christendom College this Saturday, January, 23, in Front Royal, VA. Tip-off is set for 1:00PM.
