YONKERS, NY – The University of Valley Forge Women's Soccer team gave an extraordinary effort on Monday night against the Gryphons of Sarah Lawrence College. Although the final score was 3-0, it was a much closer match than the 3-goal margin indicates.
In the 17
th minute the Gryphons took an early lead on a goal from Nora Burrows. For the remainder of the first half, neither team really mounted a great scoring chance. They continued to battle into the second half until the Patriots had a golden opportunity in the 67
th minute. A penalty shot was awarded to the Patriots after a foul in the box on the Gryphons. Senior
Rachel Stormes stepped up to take the shot, but her attempt missed just wide. The Gryphons escaped without any harm done.
In the final minutes of the game, the host school found a way to tack on two more goals and build a comfortable lead. The Patriots would mount a few more attacks, but were unable to convert any chances. Freshman goal-keeper
Makenzi Maun had 11 saves on the night.
"
I'm proud of our effort tonight. Our girls are really starting to come together as a team," Patriots Head Coach
Juan Delcid said after the game. "
Tonight could have gone either way, but unfortunately it didn't go in our favor."
The Patriots next contest will be on Saturday, September 12
th on the road against rival Summit University (formerly Baptist Bible College) at 1PM.
