Softball Earns First Win of The Season

PHOENIXVILLE, PA – The University of Valley Forge Softball Team earned its first win of the season over the weekend.  In the second game of a double-header against Christendom College, the Patriots came out on top by a final score of 16-5!

In game one, the Patriots built an early 4-1 after just two innings of play.  However, the Crusaders responded by scoring the games' next nine runs and taking a 10-4 advantage.  After some great base running by Samantha Reed and Emily Cantrell, the Patriots chipped into the lead in the bottom half of the 5th, trailing by just four (10-6).  The momentum continued into the 6th inning as Sarah Brugere and Rachel Daniels each doubled to bring in four more runs.  After 6 innings of play, the score was now 11-10 in favor of the Crusaders.  Christendom answered in a big way in the top half of the 7th, plating four more runs.  They held off the rally in the bottom half of the inning to secure the victory, 15-10.

Patriots' freshman Naomi Thompson was 2 for 5 from the plate with 2 runs scored.  Senior Sarah Brugere was 3 for 5, including a double and triple, and also scored twice.  Amanda McGinness and Rachel Daniels each finished with a double and tallied up 3 RBI's respectively.

After coming up short in game one, the Patriots were determined to rebound in game two.  They got off to a great start, scoring eight runs in the 2nd inning and taking an early 9-0 lead.  After Christendom scored four runs in the 3rd, the Patriots responded by plating seven of their own and taking a 16-4 lead.

Patriots' Head Coach Courtney Balban switched up the batting order in the second game, and it definitely paid off!  The bats came alive all throughout the line-up.  Naomi Thompson went 2 for 4 and scored two runs.  Amanda McGinness went 2 for 2 with a triple and scored twice.

Junior Emily Cantrell had her best game of the season, going 2 for 4 with a double and a team season-high 5 RBI's.  Freshman Kelsey Morrison also had her best game of the year.  She went 2 for 2 from the plate and scored twice.

The Patriots went on to win by a final score of 16-5, earning their first win of the season.
