Game Recap: Softball |

Just Out of Reach

SCHUYLKILL HAVE, PA- The women's softball team played in their final road game of the week, facing Penn State Schuylkill in a double header matchup.  The Lady Lions swept VFCC, taking both games by a final score of 0-8 and 7-14.

The Lady Patriots were able to contain the host school for the first half of game one, trailing by just three runs (0-3) at the close of the fourth inning.  Moving forward the Lady Patriots' defense began to crumble as Penn State recorded five runs to win the game by mercy rule.  VFCC was held to zero runs with Amanda McGinness, Samantha Reed and Tamika Piper scratching out the only three recorded hits of the game.

After giving up two runs in the first inning, the Lady Patriots answered right back with three runs of their own at the top of the second.  Tamika Piper and Rachel Daniels waited out the pitcher to reach first base on walks before getting into scoring positions on passed balls. With just one out working against them, and Piper on third and Daniels on second, Madison Arrowsmith drilled a single past the infield to bring Piper across the plate and Daniels to third.  Rachel Daniels received a free pass from the Lady Lions' pitcher, reaching first on a walk and advancing Arrowsmith to second.  Bases now loaded, veteran player Samantha Reed recorded two RBI's by ripping the ball into the outfield and bringing in Daniels and Arrowsmith.  Penn State was able to retire the next two batters and hold VFCC to just three runs.

The teams went back and forth exchanging runs, with the Lady Patriots trailing by just two runs, 7-9.  Bases loaded, two outs and at the top of the lineup, the Lady Lions recognized the situation and made a quick pitching change and worked the last batter to end the inning and the Patriot's four-run rally.  Penn State put up four more unearned runs to get out of reach at the end of the seventh inning.

Freshman Madison Arrowsmith led the offense with two hits, two RBI's and one run.  Amanda McGinness, Rachel Gomez, Sarah Brugere, Samantha Reed and Samantha Gavin each recorded one hit a piece.

The women return home for their next two games, playing host to Trinity Washington University, Friday, April 11.  Game one is set to start at 5pm!
