LANGHORNE, PA- The Lady Patriots competed in their final game of the 2014 season in a doubleheader contest against East Region opponent Cairn University. The Highlanders outscored the women in both matches, leaving the Patriots trailing 7-14 in game one and 0-9 in game two.
It was a slow start as the host school recorded a single run in the first and another in the second while the Lady Patriots noted one run in the top of the second inning from
Sarah Brugere. In the third inning the women hit a road block, struggling to attack offensively while allowing nine runs from the Highlanders to trail, 1-11, going into the fourth.
VFCC earned one run in the fourth before hitting a rhythm in the top of the fifth to earn five runs. Three batters in and the women had the bases loaded.
Samantha Reed popped up to centerfield, buying enough time to allow
Ariene Ohimor to cross home. Next up, power hitter
Amanda McGinness drilled a triple into centerfield to bring in three RBI's and make the score, 6-11. McGinness made her way home with a single from
Sarah Brugere before the Highlanders stopped the damage and brought the inning to an end, 7-11.
That would be the only offensive run for the Lady Patriots, as the Highlanders buckled down their defense and kept the visitors from scoring again. Cairn went on to record three more runs, two in the fifth inning and one in the six, to secure their victory.
The dry spell continued for the women into the second game as they were held to just two hits and zero runs. Six fielding errors gave way to nine Highlander runs in four innings. Ahead by over eight run by the bottom of the fifth, the host school invoked the mercy rule and took the second game.
Sarah Brugere ended the night going 2-for-3 with 2RBI's and one run.
Amanda McGinness went 2-for-6 with 3RBI's and two runs.
The women end the season with a final record of 2-27. The teams says goodbye to just one senior and looks forward to returning almost their entire roster for next season. Thank you for all your hard work in the 2014 season!
Go Patriots!
