PHOENIXVILLE, PA- The women's basketball team wrapped up their weekend tournament with a loss to the Johnson University Royals. The Royals were on a streak, defeating Cairn University the previous game and Trinity Baptist on day one. The Patriots were unable to snap the Royals momentum and took the 50-88 loss.
After a close opening, the Patriots found themselves trailing further and further behind as they were unable to develop an answer for the Royals offense. Getting beat in transition, the women's defense struggled to put a stop on the Royals' forward Taylor Baham and Tiffany Smelcer. The Patriots trailed by 35 points by the end of the first half, 21-56.
Second period displayed a different Patriots team, as they increased their shooting percentage while decreasing the Royals. In addition, the women became more aggressive, forcing 12 turnovers and out-rebounding their opponent, 20-19. Despite just the three point differential, 29-32, by the end of the second half, the 35 point gap created in the first haunted the Patriots as they were powerless to overcome the score margin.
The silver lining from the game came from freshman guard,
Bailey Mayforth. Mayforth played a powerful game, recording her first collegiate double double. She notched 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. In addition, Mayforth tallied seven steals and three assists.
Mikala Brinson played a great game with 16 points while
Ariene Ohimor notched 11 rebounds.
The Patriots return to The Pit for their final home game of the fall semester, hosting Penn State Mont Alto. The game is scheduled for Tuesday, November 25 with a 5pm start time.
