PHOENIXVILLE, PA- In the second to last home competition of the season, the women's volleyball team broke the double-digit barrier in the win column with victories over Washington Adventist University and Trinity Washington University. The women took each match in four sets, defeating the Washington Adventist Shock, 25-10-25-5, 18-25 and 26-24 followed by a win over The Trinity Tigers, 25-14, 25-15, 18-25 and 25-9!
In the first competition of the night, the women went up against Washington Adventist University. The first two sets came easy, as a deadly combination of serves and attacks allowed the Shock to combine just 15 points over the two sets. Instead of backing down the Shock came out into the third set appearing to be a completely new team. As Washington picked up their defense and started attacking harder, the Lady Patriots were caught off guard and started to fall behind. Tallying an unusual amount of service errors, Valley Forge saw their opportunity for a sweep disappear as Washington took the third set, 25-18, and kept the match alive.
Stilled stunned by the third set loss, the Lady Patriots were slow to recover, falling behind early. Taking the momentum with them, the Shock took advantage of the scrambled play of the Lady Patriots. Refusing to go into a fifth set, Valley Forge gathered themselves and put together a string of points to tie the Shock, 15-15. From there it was a foot race to finish line with each time straining to get a solid lead. Finally, with two back-to-back kills, the Lady Patriots put an end to the match, securing the set, 26-24!
Faith Bachman played solid at the net with 13 kills.
Brittany Eberly secured the defense with 18 digs in addition to two aces.
Olivia Wireman gathered 31 assists and five aces.
Meeting again for the second time in three days, the Trinity Washington Tigers were looking to even the score after losing to Valley Forge in four sets.
Jumping on their best attacker early, the Lady Patriots refused to be beat by the kill. Moving the ball around to keep the Tigers guessing, the women went on a solid stretch to advance their lead. Smart serves added to the cushion and clinch a first and second set victory for the Lady Patriots, 25-14 and 25-15.
Then it appeared that someone flipped the switch on Valley Forge. Playing with little to zero energy, the Lady Patriots started to make various mental mistakes. Seizing the opportunity, the Lady Tigers cashed in on the host school's errors to gain the lead and keep it throughout the set. Reaching 25 points, Trinity Washington forced a fourth set with Valley Forge as the Lady Patriots recorded just 18 points of their own.
Feeling the de ja` vu, Valley Forge were bent on not making the fourth set nail biter. Getting their energy back the women jumped out to a 7-points lead, 8-1, and never looked back. Zeroing in on the holes in the Lady Tiger's serve receive system, the women started to gather service aces to extend their lead. As time went on, Valley Forge cruised to a 25-9 victory!
Gabrielle Martin came up big for Valley Forge, notching 12 kills, four aces and seven digs.
Aubrie McQuown recorded nine kills and two block, while
Madison Arrowsmith walked away with eight kills.
