WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Valley Forge Christian College women's softball team picked up its' first two wins of the 2013 season on Saturday (April 6), as they defeated Trinity Washington University in a double header. The Patriots won Game 1 by a score of 18-8. Game 2 was secured by a score of 19-10!
In Game 1, the Lady Patriots held a strong scoring advantage, going up 10-3 at the top of the fourth inning. With Trinity up to bat and two outs against them, the Tigers played off of the Patriots' errors to gain three runs, trailing just 10-6. The Patriots rallied back in the next two innings to build their cushion, 14-6. Earning four more runs over the next two innings and holding Trinity to just two runs, the Lady Patriots secured their first victory of the season!
Jaclynn Nichols pitched the entire seven innings for the Patriots, striking out seven batters and putting out two.
Amanda Reich went 1-for-4 at the plate, earning four runs and one RBI. Reich recorded her first career homerun!
Samantha Reed went 3-for-5 at the plate, recording two RBI's.
Taking their momentum into game 2, the Lady Patriots held a solid 12-2 run lead going into the bottom of the third inning. A homerun from Trinity got the Lions' bats going, earning three runs to their score (12-5). At the top of the fifth inning, the Patriots put together a string of single hits to put their players around the bases, recording another three runs to extend the lead, 15-5. At the bottom of the inning, the Tigers started to make a comeback, scoring five runs to trail the Patriots, 15-10. Feeling the pressure, the Patriots buckled down their defense and retired the next six batters, ending the game and securing the Patriots second win.
Sarah Brugere went 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring four runs and bringing in four RBI's. Brugere recorded her first career homerun.
Jaclynn Nichols went 3-for-6 at the plate, recording two RBI's and three runs. Nichols pitched seven straight innings, striking-out seven batters and recorded just one walk.
Whitney LaPointe went 2-for-5 at the plate, earning three runs and two RBI's.
The Patriots return to the dirt Monday, April 9, as they travel to Penn State Schuylkill for a double-header match up. The first game is set to start at 3pm!
